SMHA partners with Colgate University to provide volunteer manpower in the West End

Students from New York's Colgate University traveled to New Iberia during their Spring Break to volunteer their time and energy in a revitalization project on Robertson Street. The twelve students, members of Colgate's Center for Outreach and Volunteerism Education (COVE), assisted in gutting five structurally-sound houses on the street so that the local non-profit Rebuild Iberia can begin to restore them to habitable status.

SMHA orchestrated the students' visit with additional help from the First United Methodist Church of New Iberia, which provided lodging during their stay. SMHA has facilitated a number of such efforts with Colgate since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, fostering a relationship with the mutual goal of improving communities in need of investment.
