SMHA Report Examines Impact of Hurricanes on Louisiana Food Systems

The recovery and restoration of agriculture and food systems in South Louisiana from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita will cost over $2 billion according to a report commissioned by SMHA and prepared by Dr. Hank Herrera, president and CEO of The Center for Popular Research, Education and Policy in Rochester, New York.

Despite the catastrophic devastation, the report says Louisiana has the potential for rebuilding the Louisiana food system in a way that maximizes opportunity for Louisiana farmers and food producers to supply local food for the people of Louisiana and to capture the economic development potential of building new local supply chains. (Click on link at the end of this article for a copy of the full report.)
