SMHA Film Vividly Tells Hurricane Rita Story
Southern Mutual premiered its film on "Hurricane Rita, Rural Recovery" on August 17 at the Sliman Theater in downtown New Iberia, Louisiana. The 8-minute film, which was professionally produced by the Center for Rural Strategies and underwritten by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, debuted earlier in New York and Washington, D.C.

Film premieres at New Iberia theater.
It tells the story of the "forgotten storm" and the rural Louisianians who have struggled to recover their homes, their businesses, their lives and their cultures.

Representative Sydnie Mae Durand introduces SMHA's "Hurricane Rita Rural Recovery" film as Helen Vinton (left) and Lorna Bourg (center) look on.
As Kate Areas who was featured in the film said, "People's furniture was just all over . . . Things that you knew they had worked for all their lives was just washed out. You just wanted to fix it and you couldn't. . . I just thought, 'We'll never get our community back.'" With SMHA's help, she has since reopened her restaurant in Lafitte, Louisiana.

New Iberia area residents attend the Louisiana premiere.
