WECNA Succeeds in removal of abandoned homes

West End Council of Neighborhood Associations (WECNA) leadership was instrumental in bringing about the removal of derelict properties (from beautiful land that would otherwise be a local community asset) on Shot Street in New Iberia. SMHA has been working with WECNA for nearly a decade, providing leadership development and training opportunities, mentoring from SMHA's CEO Lorna Bourg, and technical assistance on initiatives as requested by the community.

This street is lined on both sides by oak trees and is one of the most beautiful streets in the city. WECNA leadership was determined to get their community back.

As a result of WECNA's work, the New Iberia City Council approved the demolition of the entire block of homes which had been called for many years "drug houses".  The owners were given 30 days to remove or tear down the properties.  This was completed in 2018.

New Iberia continues to see change and leadership in this community!
