Southern Mutual Financial Services (SMFS), an affiliate of Southern Mutual Help Association, Inc., has now loaned more than one million dollars in affordable capital to hard working families across Southern Louisiana!

On Friday, February 11th, SMFS closed a mortgage loan with Eric Lee Colligan of Ville Platte, Louisiana. This loan put SMFS over the one million dollar threshold.Clem Matthews, SMFS' Loan Officer, attended this important closing. "SMFS has made home ownership and small businesses possible for many hard working families. This one million dollar mark shows the impact of SMFS in communities and with families," Clem explained.

Eric was renting a small trailer that was cramped for his growing family. He wanted to improve his life and make sure that he, Jessica, and their two children have plenty of room to grow up and play. With this mortgage loan, he and his family will be purchasing a good sized home. Jessica was so excited about their new home that she asked,"Can we move in tonight?!"

In addition to home ownership and small business loans, SMFS makes consumer loans available to new homeowners. Created in 2001, SMFS provides affordable capital and development services to rural families, with emphasis on lending to women and people of color.
