Five thousand plastic alligators were propelled down Bayou Teche near Bouligny Plaza in downtown New Iberia in The Great Gator Race, which has become an annual tradition and fundraiser for Southern Mutual Help Association. The alligators were sponsored at $5.00 each, with the winners garnering exciting prizes, such as a four-night Caribbean cruise, a hunting trip, gift certificates, spa packages, and more. Lil'' Nathan & The Zydeco Big Timers provided the music for the celebration which began at 11:00 a.m. on March 7. The event offered a variety of food booths and a petting zoo for the children. This year''s grand prize winner was G.W. Carter of New Iberia.
