Recently, Southern Mutual Help Association, Inc. (SMHA) President and CEO Lorna Bourg traveled to Chicago, Illinois for a meeting of minds with other MacArthur Foundation Fellows. Bourg was nominated and awarded her fellowship in 1992, for her outstanding work as a Rural Development Leader.
From June of 1981 through September 2013, 897 Fellows have been named, with only five recipients working in Louisiana at the time of their award. Here, in local New Iberia, MacArthur Fellows Wilma Subra and Lorna Bourg have worked tremendously hard, making "change happen” throughout Louisiana, regionally, and even nationally.
Bourg was awarded based on her innovative, holistic approach to community development in south Louisiana, and she continues that work today in her development of Traditional Neighborhood Development, (TND), Teche Ridge, the creation of a $100 million secondary market with IBERIABANK, establishment of the Gulf Coast Fishers Fund and her tireless efforts to rebuild south Louisiana better than before
