West End Council of Neighborhood Associations (WECNA) leadership was instrumental in bringing about the removal of derelict properties (from beautiful land that would otherwise be a local community asset) on Shot Street in New Iberia. SMHA has been working with WECNA for nearly a decade, providing leadership development and training opportunities, mentoring from SMHA's CEO Lorna Bourg, and technical assistance on initiatives as requested by the community.

SMHA has for the last decade maintained to foundations and policy-makers that their metro-centric approach and investment was not viable without understanding the importance of Rural America. Rural resources are not there solely to be extracted for cities and more importantly, the disdain or at best the lack of respect for and appreciation of rural families and communities was not going to build America's future.
